Adani is the latest target of Hindenburg Research's short selling, with the company taking a market cap since a Hindenburg Research report coming out. Read the Conversation:
The biggest news over the past week in financial markets has been the proverbial David versus Goliath battle between short-seller Hindenburg Research and Indian conglomerate Adani Group. Now, Hindenburg Research is an activist short seller, so what they do is they take a short position by selling stock in a company, and then they'll release an extensive report and research into why that is the case and Adani is their latest target, which has seen 66 billion wiped off the market cap since the report came out. Now, uh, Dhani have, have hit back with their own report seeming to address the concerns, but the tit for tat has been ongoing with, with Hindenburg claiming that they haven't addressed any of the claims and really Dhani is one of the biggest corporate forwards in history.
And this whole process has, has brought up the fresh debate of activist short selling and, and whether it's an ethical practice, um, detractors will say it's market manipulation and there's a history of short and distort, which is a negative news story about a company and, and the immediate sort of response is, is a sell off and then they cover that short similar to a pump and dump, but short selling does provide price discovery in the market and when you have a company such as Hindenburg, which has such a strong track record of identifying companies that are doing the wrong things, then you definitely need to sit up and you need to take notice of this story.
