Cyber attack hits Nine Network: How do businesses protect themselves?
On Sunday 28 March, a cyber-attack disrupted live broadcasts on Australia's Nine Network, prompting concerns about nationwide vulnerability to cyber hackers.
What happened with Nine Network?
Nine Network was at the centre of the largest cyber attack on a media company in Australia's history, which has brought network's news production systems around the country to a grinding halt for more than 24 hours. The Today show was back on air yesterday.
According to 9News, it has been described as a sophisticated and calculated attack and has fundamentally disrupted how the network delivers and presents news.
Nine, the publisher of the attacked website, said the attack was affecting the network's ability to produce news and current affairs, forcing contingency plans to be put in place. It is working with the Australian Cyber Security Centre in order to resolve the issue, but there are concerns it could take weeks to restore to normal.
The importance of Cybersecurity to your business
In another article on Why Cybersecurity Should Matter To You, cybersecurity and cyber threats remain an issue and risk that individuals tend to attribute only to large corporations who actually have something to lose or government bodies that actually have the infrastructure, data and resources to pump millions into their cyber security mechanisms. While larger corporates and companies may seem like a more appealing target for cyber terrorists, don’t be fooled into thinking that there is no incentive for these threats to target your SME.
