The Market for Diesel Replacement in Australia
Diesel is a strategically important resource in Australia, particularly in its deployment in heavy haulage logistics and in the mining industry. Australia consumed over 31 billion litres of diesel in 2022 to fuel the ~5.3 million diesel vehicles on Australian roads, which is the equivalent of 84m litres of diesel consumed per day. According to the Climate Change Authority, transport was responsible for approx. 94 Mt CO2e or around 20% of Australia’s total GHG emissions in 2020. Trucks, buses, and light commercial vehicles form 38% of total transport emissions.
